Hitting the gym is a great way to stay healthy and fit year-round. However, particularly this time of year, germs are lurking with every touch and breath of air. So how do you keep yourself from getting sick while still getting regular exercise?

How germs spread

Germs access the body via the mouth, nose, eyes and cuts on our skin. They can live on surfaces for just a few hours or up to three days. When airborne, germs can travel up to six feet via speaking, coughing or sneezing.

Keeping germs at bay

Now that we know how germs travel and where they live, we can discuss prevention. In addition to eating to support your immune system, getting plenty of rest and consuming a healthy amount of water, these steps can keep those unwanted bugs at bay:

  • Bring your own equipment. Pack a gym bag with your personal towel, exercise mat, water bottle, shower essentials, shower sandals, etc.

  • Watch your hands. Avoid touching machine equipment prior to wiping down before use and wipe down after.

  • Know the schedule. Ask the front desk when their peak hours are during the day. Then avoid those times where distance between patrons is less than the recommended 6 feet for social distancing.

  • Mask up. Bring a mask to wear when those near you may be coughing or sneezing. This is also a polite gesture if you are showing any of these symptoms but feeling well enough to workout.

  • Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands! As always, thorough hand washing is the best way to keep yourself and others healthy.
