Acupuncture

A holistic approach to wellness

Acupuncture is a natural complement to integrative medicine, offering a hands-on approach that supports both the physical body and the nervous system. As one of the treatment options available from PPG – Integrative Medicine, acupuncture is performed by a skilled advanced practice provider and has been used for centuries to help with multiple ailments, including:

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an Eastern medical therapy that aims to prevent and treat specific conditions by inserting very thin needles into different points on the body. The eastern theory draws on the belief that physical and emotional stress in everyday life can cause an imbalance of your body's vital energy, qi (pronounced “chee”). Acupuncture is used to correct these imbalances by stimulating the body's natural healing capabilities.

While acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, scientific research supports its effectiveness for various conditions. Functional MRI studies have demonstrated that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, enhancing communication between nerves and triggering the release of natural endorphins and other pain-relieving chemicals. Research has also shown that acupuncture can relieve myofascial pain by releasing muscular trigger points and promoting anti-inflammatory effects.

Why is acupuncture done?
Some people use acupuncture to relieve pain, such as low back pain, or to manage chronic pain from osteoarthritis, headaches or neck problems. Some cancer patients use acupuncture to help with symptoms like nausea and vomiting, pain, anxiety, fatigue, hot flashes, neuropathy or sleep problems.
How is acupuncture done?

Your provider will review your main concerns and gather information about sleep, digestion, stress, and other factors to obtain a comprehensive understanding of your case.

The acupuncture points selected will depend on your condition and are chosen using both traditional Eastern point locations and Western anatomical and muscular landmarks. Once you are comfortable on the table and the needles are inserted, the treatment typically lasts 30-60 minutes. The needles may be gently stimulated by the practitioner or connected to a TENS unit for electroacupuncture. Many people find acupuncture treatment deeply relaxing, and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during this time. The duration and frequency of your treatments will be tailored to your individual condition.

How safe is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is safe when done by a certified provider. Licensed Acupuncturists (LAc) hold a Master’s or Doctoral degree in acupuncture and receive extensive training in anatomy and Clean Needle Technique. Our providers have passed comprehensive national board examinations administered by the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (NCBAHM) and are licensed by the state of Indiana. As required by law, we use pre-sterilized, disposable, single-use needles to ensure your complete safety.

Talk with your provider if you would like more information about acupuncture or have additional questions.
