Usability of a Wound Compression Pressure Sensing Device Among Wound Care Staff

About

Tight Alright is a device developed by FeelTect, an Irish startup company, to assist practitioners with compression therapy. The device senses pressure while bandages are applied and provides real-time compression feedback through a companion app via Bluetooth.

In 2023, HSIR conducted 10 study sessions comprising usability testing tasks and a semi-structured interview to help inform revisions to the Tight Alright device and deployment and marketing strategies. The sessions were held at Parkview Health wound care centers with nurse participants who had been providing wound care for VLUs. Participants applied compression bandages to the lower leg of a healthy volunteer both with and without Tight Alright and reflected on the perceived ability of Tight Alright to improve targeted compression application. Data collected included time spent on each task, task success/failure, standardized scales like the NASA Task Load Index and the System Usability Scale, and qualitative survey and interview responses (e.g., desired modifications, intended use of pressure data and potential workflow integration).

The results of this partnership between FeelTect and HSIR helped FeelTect garner valuable design feedback about their device and insight on the US hospital market. FeelTect anticipates Tight Alright will help practitioners achieve optimal pressure.
