Nurse practitioner continues service to hometown, joins primary care team in Huntington
HUNTINGTON, IND. – July 28, 2025 – Olivia Smart, FNP-C, has joined the Parkview Physicians Group (PPG) – Family Medicine team in Huntington and is welcoming patients at the office at 2003 Stults Road, Suite 100.
While primary care represents a new chapter in Smart’s nursing career, she is far from a newcomer to Huntington or Parkview. A Huntington North High School graduate who has worked in multiple patient care roles at Parkview Huntington Hospital (PHH), she is excited to continue to serve the community she loves.
“Parkview Huntington has always been home to incredible mentors and colleagues who have helped guide and support me along the way,” said Smart. “It’s an honor to now serve the same community that raised me. Being from Huntington allows me to truly understand and connect with my patients, and it gives me a unique perspective on the resources and support available in our area.”
“It’s wonderful to see a provider like Olivia grow and develop and continue to use her expanding skills for the benefit of area residents,” said Deb Potempa, market president, Parkview Health South. “Her wide-ranging experience in nursing has equipped her well to provide expert primary care for local families. There’s no doubt that Olivia is dedicated to her hometown, to Parkview and to outstanding patient care.”
Smart earned her Master of Science in Nursing degree (MSN, family nurse practitioner) through Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Purdue University Fort Wayne.
Certified as a family nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, she provides care for PPG – Family Medicine patients in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Flaig-Miller.
Smart discovered her interest in healthcare during a basic EMT course and a high school internship with Parkview. She got her start in nursing as a patient care technician, working in oncology, medical/surgical, emergency medicine and behavioral health environments. As a registered nurse, she cared for the tiniest and often critically ill patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Parkview Regional Medical Center, providing family-centered care and ensuring that parents felt supported and informed during their challenging NICU journey.
Most recently, as an emergency department nurse at PHH, she worked with a team tending patients of all ages with a wide range of medical conditions, from life-threatening injuries to stroke or heart attack symptoms to less critical health issues.
Away from work, Smart and her husband, who is also “deeply rooted in Huntington County,” stay busy with their 7-month-old son and their devoted American Staffordshire Terrier. They enjoy family walks and hosting get-togethers with family and friends. Smart is an avid reader and an enthusiastic Cincinnati Reds fan.
She is a past board member of McKenzie’s Hope, a child and domestic abuse advocacy center providing community access to resources at no cost. The organization collaborates with local law enforcement agencies to create a safe and comfortable environment for client interviews.
