Safety & Prevention

Every season comes with its own unique activities and fun, as well as its own safety hazards. Fall is no exception. The arrival of autumn brings backyard gatherings that often include roasting hot dogs and making s’mores over a campfire. These festive activities can pose several fire safety hazards. Fortunately, the Fort Wayne Fire Department has some tips for protecting yourself and your loved ones.

  • Campfires should be no greater than 36 inches in diameter and 24 inches in height.

  • A garden hose connected to a water supply, buckets, a shovel, a fire extinguisher, or other approved fire extinguishing equipment should be readily available at the burn site.

  • Only wood should be burned--no leaves, paper or trash.

  • Never leave campfires unattended.

  • The fire should be at least 25 feet away from any structure or fence.

  • If the burning creates a smoke nuisance or a hazardous condition exists, the burning should be extinguished.

  • Keep campfires away from dry grass and leaves.

  • Always properly extinguish the fire before leaving the area.
