The Clinical Antithrombotic Therapy Service (CATS) Clinic at Parkview Heart Institute is designed to guide both patients and providers through the complex array of antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications, commonly referred to as “blood thinners”, that are now so important and so often prescribed in the treatment of heart attack, stroke, and vascular disease.

Medical professionals: refer your patient to the CATS Clinic

The Clinical Antithrombotic Therapy Service (CATS) Clinic at Parkview Heart Institute is designed to guide both patients and providers through the complex array of antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications that are now so important and so commonly prescribed in the treatment of heart attack, stroke, and vascular disease. The entire field of antithrombotic therapy, with respect to both arterial and venous diseases, has changed dramatically in the past 10 years, and continues to evolve. Although antithrombotic medications are critically necessary in many patients, they are by nature also high-risk and carry significant risk of unwanted bleeding.

The CATS Clinic is a referral service that provides consultation, education and close follow-up for patients taking antithrombotic drugs. Both patients and providers can benefit as our experts navigate the fine-line landscape between appropriate, evidence-based treatment/prevention of thromboembolism and potential bleeding complications.

Type of patients to refer:

Any patient with a recent or remote past arterial or venous thrombotic event
Any patient on existing or recently started antiplatelet/ anticoagulation medications
Any patient who should be considered for antithrombotic therapy

Consultations:

The CATS Clinic team commonly provides inpatient consultations during a hospitalization or emergency department visit for a blood clot or bleeding problem. In the latter instance, CATS provides a smooth transition and follow-up for the outpatient setting once the patient is discharged.

Inpatients are seen 24/7 with a Cardiology consult by calling the Cardiology triage line at 260-266-3392.
